Four tips for choosing the perfect hardwood
Wood flooring instantly uplevels your home's appearance, adds value to your property and is versatile enough to fit into any decor. Whether you choose engineered or solid hardwood flooring, you can always count on a long life span; they both last for years and, unless there's structural damage, it only takes sanding and refinishing to make them look like new again.
There's more to it than just choosing a color, however. Here, from your hardwood flooring company, are some tips on finding the perfect wood floor for you.
Know the basics
No, we're not asking you to be an expert, and we're not giving your homework! But learn some fundamentals, such as domestic vs. exotic species, various grain patterns, textures, etc. Not all hardwoods have the same hardness level, especially if you have different durability needs; the Janka Hardness Scale rates domestic and exotic species. As the numbers increase, so does the hardness.
Decide if you want the factory finished or on-site
This could be your most important decision. Many prefer factory finished because they know what they're getting; they can start coordinating even before the floors arrive. There's no mess to clean up, no odors and, they use an ultra-tough finish that can only be used in controlled settings, making them somewhat stronger.
On the other hand, many prefer on-site finishing. There are no stains, so greater customization gives the customer more control over the sheen. They can also do intricate techniques, such as inlays and, since installers will sand between coatings, the surface is smoother.
Two more ways to select the perfect wood floor
1. Decide if you want solid or engineered wood. While they both look similar, engineered wood is constructed to be more stable and better handle water.
2. Look at your overall decor. Be sure the colors coordinate with the rest of your interior plan, so you have one cohesive look.
